The XP version of Windows Explorer and the Office 2003 software suite were the versions used in creating this handbook. This handbook is designed to be: 1. An implementation guide. This handbook steps you through each phase of the 5S process. Examples are shown to assist you in this process. No two file systems (Desktops) are the same; therefore, use the examples as a guide when you apply that phase or step to your Desktop. 2. A Lean beginning. 5S is a fundamental Lean tool and is considered the foundation for additional Lean tool application. Once 5S has been implemented and results have been obtained, there will be a need to integrate more Lean tools into your Desktop environment. 3. A spark for the department. Once everyone understands the basic premise of Lean and 5S, then that understanding can serve as a catalyst for a more comprehensive application of Lean tools. (iLean and Lean Office Demystified II are available books on how additional Lean tools can be applied to your Desktop environment.) 4. A bridge for improved performance. It is often stated that the average person at work today has nearly 80 emails to deal with on a daily basis. This, along with the other application files, can at times be overwhelming for the individual. Using 5S for organizing your emails, as well as the other application files, will greatly assist in managing this barrage of information. Implementing 5S to your files and folders will allow for a more stress-free workplace. Each chapter or section will have the following areas: Brief description on the purpose of each 5S step This part of the chapter will provide an overview of the content. It will allow you to gain a perspective on how this particular topic will relate to the Lean (and 5S) concept relative to improvement opportunities in your Desktop environment. How this tool can be implemented Comprehensive instructions will be provided; giving you a guide to implement each step of the 5S process. Windows Explorer A specific step-by-step approach will demonstrate the application of each phase of the 5S process relative to the Windows Explorer environment. Screen shots and selections will be provided for you to follow along on your computer if you so desire. Microsoft Outlook A specific step-by-step approach will demonstrate the application of each phase of the 5S process relative to the Microsoft Outlook environment. Screen shots and selections will be provided for you to follow along on your computer if you so desire. Key Points Additional information will be provided to further assist you with the nuances that comprise each Desktop environment. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

I have been waiting for something like this for a long time. This book is packed full of useful information. We are distributing these to all our office workers and plan to meet on a regular basis to actively implement a better file and folder Desktop system. Five stars from me!

Great Beginning of Lean for Electronic Files and FoldersMay 28, 2009
By Charlene Myers
"Lean-Sigma Specialist"
The 5S Desktop (PC) Pocket Handbook is in a class of its own. The concept, as well as the step-by-step instructions, on how to apply the most basic concept of Lean to your Desktop files and folders, makes this the first Lean book that I have found true value. Many books briefly discuss on how Lean can be applied to the digital world, but none provide concrete examples on what/how to do it. This book sets the bar high for everyone. Having both Windows Explorer and Outlook referenced throughout is great!

This book is a home run! Finally, a detailed, step-by-step approach in applying 5S to electronic (i.e., Desktop) files and folders. Some books have touched on it, but this book is in a league of its own - enough said. Great buy!

Easy Read With Quick Results Using 5S!!Nov 24, 2010
By Christa Shuman I found this "simple to read" pocket guide to match was I was expecting and more! It provided step-by-step instructions that were somewhat familiar to my experience within the Windows environment that allowed me to rethink how I organize my electronic files and folders. "The 5S for the Desktop Pocket Handbook" is innovative and up-to-date with the latest tools and applications of Lean in the workplace. Our team used the concepts in this book and incorporated them into our departmental procedures. Our results of the implementation are very positive throughout the organization. A book I highly recommend!!!

Bringing Lean to the PC Desktop and Data ControlNov 23, 2010
By Joe D. Buys As a consultant, I help my clients increase effficiencies in processes and proceedures throughout their organizations. This is the first book to attack the hidden battlefield, our computers, that we all tought were exempt from waste and inefficiency because they were suppose to be tools to fight them. The principles in this book give us back control of our computer desktops so they can indeed deliver on their original promise. We have all heard the term "garbage in, garbage out". That's what's been happening to millions of desktop computers in organizations throughout the world. They're filled with information that's impossible to find and use. This small little book helps us apply the simple principles of Lean process control to organize that information in a way that is both intuitive and efficient. It goes way beyond all the Microsoft help books to spell-out a step-by-step process to harness and share all the information that's available on your organization's computers. Bravo! A great little book.
