Sometimes enigmatic, sometimes funny, but always powerful and enlightening, these stories of continuous improvement and Lean implementation are organized around the Toyota House framework. After covering historical and foundational aspects of TPS, the stories go on to illustrate a wealth of essential topics encompassing the timeless, unchanging principles of Just-In-Time, Built in Quality, and Respect for People, and delves into specifics on many tools like kanban, Quick Changeover, and A3 Problem Solving. Winner of a 2011 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize More than entertainment, the telling of stories is a way that human wisdom is handed from one generation to the next. It is a gentle but memorable way to learn the lessons of failure without suffering the personal pain of misdirected efforts; a way to find the best path without having to personally experience hundreds of dead-end journeys. It is a way to gain understanding that goes deeper than definitions. "When Steve writes about the TPS house, it is not just an abstraction. It is something he lives. He can vividly picture it in every operation…. Steve’s stories…bring the house to life." --From the Foreword by Jeffrey K. Liker, author of The Toyota Way TPS is more than just a manufacturing blueprint and a set of business rules. It is a tradition, a learned and shared cultural legacy that imbues each ensuing generation with ethics and a sense of purpose that goes far beyond the punching of a clock and the filling of a ledger. It is far better taught by stories than by rulebooks. Ideal for individual learning and reflection as well as for use with groups, Stories From My Sensei provides key insights into how and how-not-to implement TPS principles. Reflection questions accompany each story to help readers apply the lessons to their own situations—situations that will ultimately become the basis of stories handed down to the next generation. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

Excellent book - MUST READ for all those on the Lean JourneyNov 23, 2009
By Magdelene Teo
"Magdelene Teo"
I have had the opportunity to attend the Lean Certification course at University of Michigan where Steve was teaching, and also an opportunity to have him train us for a project. Steve has a vast knowledge of Lean that I was not able to "steal" from him. This book allowed me to experience more of his learnings throughout his 20 somewhat years with Lean. I recently got this book and used some of his learnings to apply to my own sessions teaching my counterparts in healthcare about Lean. Till this day, I have used Steve's story of "stand in circle" in my teachings. This has always captivated the audience! Thank you very much Steve for putting down your experiences into this book - I carry it with me for a quick review and recap of the important principles and tools used. The flow of information is very apt for me as a practitioner of Lean.

Stories from my SenseiNov 23, 2009
By D. Patrick I have had the pleasure to interact with the author and was always amazed that his knowlege and experiences were not available in a book. I was very pleased when this book came out.
I have been working to implement lean principles for several years and I found the book very helpful. The book provides a mix of helpful learning points about lean principles and provides very enlightening and help stories of how those principles have been implemented. I highly recommend the book to those who are struggling along the lean journey.

Learning by DoingNov 26, 2009
By J. Huntzinger Stories From My Sensei is unique and an excellent learning tool. The only way to truly learn lean/TPS is by actually doing it. Steve relates his own learning struggles which helped him understand and implement the principles of lean. For anyone who works in operations - whether it is in manufacturing or service - they can relate to the situations, and Steve explains his thinking and doing process (PDCA) which lead to his own learning. Understanding the cycle of learning - a series of tries, failures, reflecting, and repeat - which build skill, knowledge, understanding, and experience that lead to ever escalating levels of success. Steve's book is fun to read as it makes you recall your own lessons learned and builds your understanding at the same time.

The Perfect Balance of Principles and Practice!Nov 25, 2009
By Cathy M. Longo Stories from My Sensei achieves a perfect balance between the principles and practical application of TPS! Steve's wonderful ability to tell stories in such a meaningful (yet entertaining) way enables the reader to grasp the concepts being presented and immediately connect them with practical advice on how to (and how not to!) deploy and sustain them. I admit to an advantage in reading this book: it enabled me to relive the opportunity I had when first starting my own "Lean Journey" with Steve as my guide at the University of Michigan's "Lean Healthcare" program, and in subsequent consulting engagements as we began to deploy Lean in our own environment. As a "non-engineering type", Steve's stories enable me to quickly connect with the principles of Lean and see how its use in my world of health care is immediately applicable. These stories energized my own interest and enthusiasm for embracing Lean, and I now have the pleasure of following Steve's examples and telling the stories of my own journey as I deploy Lean in my own organization (although none of mine are of the caliber of "Stand in Circle" - yet!). This book recreates that learning experience through both clear and concise presentations of the principles of TPS and through immediately relatable stories that enable the reader to connect in a way that the vast majority of "textbook tomes" on TPS never will!

Lean Lessons from One of the BestNov 06, 2009
By J. Alexander I really enjoyed Steve's book and found it engaging and enlightening. The book is very approachable for those who are new to Lean and continuous improvement; and also has much to share for those who have been at this for a while. The stories share something much more valuable than other books that focus exclusively on the tools and really get to a deeper appreciation for Lean. The life lessons that Steve shares can really help you avoid some of the missteps that can happen when brining this philosophy to your organization. All in all a very entertaining read that helps to demystify Lean and provides a great roadmap for implementing a strong Toyota house model.
