5Just the First Chapter Alone is Worth Buying This Book! The Rest is Icing!Apr 28, 2010

Today I learned something. And that is worth the price of this book!

David Parmenter opens the book showing how we often confuse results, with actions that we need to take to get those results. He shows an onion and Key Result Indicators (KRIs) being the outer most layer of that onion. This is what we see as the end result in a company - Customer Satisfaction, Financial Results in terms of Profits, etc. The next layers inside are the Result Indicators (RIs) and Performance Indicators (PIs). Performance Indicators are like % Increase in Sales with say top 10 Customers. Result Indicators are like Sales done Yesterday. David then makes the key distinction that only some are Key Performance Indicators that drive the whole company outwards from the core of the onion! These are the ones you need to monitor closely on a daily, weekly, monthly basis as appropriate but they cause the other indicators to have positive or negative values.

The example he uses is that of a British Airways CEO who always called the relevant British Airways people at the airport EVERYTIME a flight left late. That kept the BA personnel on their toes making sure the planes left on time all the time! Now every Performance Indicator, Result Indicator and Key Results Indicator downstream like On Time Record, Sales Per Flight and Customer Satisfaction Index were all exemplary!

David also talks about a very useful 10/80/10 rule that says KPIs should only be 10% of all the metrics. Result Indicators and Performance Indicators make up 80% and Key Result Indicators 10%. This enables management at different levels pay attention to those that are relevant and urgent on a daily basis (KPIs) so that all downstream results and indicators are on track.

There is also an elaborate 12 step implementation process on how to plan for, implement and fine tune a KPI measurement regimen.

The best illustration I liked was that of a Dial Chart on page 171 that provided at a glance a lot of information - Performance Indicator on a Speedometer where you can see current performance value, Best Performance so far as a dot on the meter, worst performance as a dot, acceptable, middle and unacceptable ranges of performance all in the same speedometer! In one glance you know where your current performance stands. That should be the goal of visualizations - all information in one place at the same time!

I will never think about KPIs the same way again! Very useful, illuminating book!

When you are trying to implement a performance mesurements system in a non-profit it is extremely important to have tools that are clear, concise and useful.Parmenter's book Key Performance Indicators especially the second edition played a clear role in helping me design indicators that made the most sense. Further the info in the book played a key role in helping my office develop workshops to explain how to develop indicators and identify indicators for support as well as social service program areas that made the most sense. I highly recommend this book if this is the dierction you are moving in.

If you have been asked to implement, think about, derive or identify potential KPIs for your company, this book is invaluable. This book contains a totally new way of considering how to define and present performance indicators. While some implementation strategies provided are 'idealistic' the main concepts and distinguishing between types of indicators makes this a book worth buying.

I got the book on time, no issues on delivery, good conditions. I received the book as requested, the saller provided the product as it was published in the link. The content of the book is as described on the description of the book. There was no inconvenience with the bought of this book.

If you are thinking of buying this book, be extra careful of this deceitful author!

I once reviewed the first edition of this book and decided to warn others about this author about his "bait and switch" tactics. He pretends to sell a book but is actually promoting his website in order to earn more money, only in the region of US$400.

As per my experience and the Amazon reviews by other users, this book is useless for the practical implementation of KPIs.
His books are no more than an advertising pamphlet for garnering more consultation fees from his website. There is no useful information about the implementation of KPIs despite the title of his book.

I suggest that you refer to my previous review under the following link:-

After successfully warning many others (60 out of 68 as at April 2011) about this author, this author also blatantly vandalised my other Amazon product reviews (via the comments section) which have absolutely no bearing on the review of his books.

If you are thinking of buying any books from this author, I suggest that you pause for a moment and ask yourself these 2 questions,

1. Would I buy any book written by an author who cannot accept frank criticism of his works and who vandalises the product reviews of an honest critic in retaliation?

2. Would I buy a book which has no concrete facts about KPIs but is actually a marketing pamphlet akin to a credit card advertisement?

I rest my case.
