Description:

The goal of implementing Lean/World Class Enterprise is to improve and grow American businesses by making them globally competitive. With the news filled with debates about outsourcing, and moving businesses overseas, being globally competitive while maintaining their facilities in the US sounds like just what American business needs. So how successful are American companies at implementing these techniques? A recent report from Industry Week magazine sadly summarizes the current state of implementations.

Industry Week reported that 72% of the 884 U.S. companies responding to their survey were in various stages of implementing an improvement strategy such as Lean or World Class manufacturing, Agile manufacturing, Six Sigma, TPS, Theory of Constraints, or others. Of these companies, 75% reported that they had made "no" or just "some" progress toward their World Class manufacturing goals. Only 2% of the companies reported achieving World Class manufacturing status.

Why aren’t more companies showing significant progress in their goal to become World Class? This book has answers.

Written for both experienced Lean/World Class implementers and companies just beginning the World Class Enterprise (WCE) journey, this book lists the ten reasons implementations fail (in order of severity) and what companies can do to prevent or recover from their occurrence.

4Nice addition to the lean book worldJul 05, 2005
By Mark Graban "Blogger, author, consultant, speaker"
This is a book that's needed publishing for quite some time. Most lean books focus on what you *should* do, assuming that your lean effort can absolutely be a success. This book recognizes that lean transformation is very difficult and can get derailed easily. Of the ten reasons that lean failures occur, he specifies two of them as absolute show stoppers and the other eight are things that can slow down your lean effort. The only reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is its relatively short length (which can be a plus, however, if you're giving this to a busy executive). There were a few very good "War Story" examples in the book, which is what I really expected to read. The book could have been fleshed out with more war stories and case studies, that would have made it 5 stars.

5Concise and excellent summaryNov 29, 2004
By Kevin Meyer "Author, Evolving Excellence"
This book complements the other excellent books by Larry Rubrich, including "Implementing World Class Manufacturing". Although many of us who have taken the Lean journey are aware of the potential pitfalls, this book brings them all together in a concise and easy to read format. Great to refer back to periodically during a Lean transformation to ensure that subtle precursors of potential pitfalls are not occurring.

4A must-read for managementDec 30, 2007
By Mike T. "C.I. Leader"
This simple, well-written book reads very quickly. It will be difficult for anyone with experience in Lean to not put faces to each of the failure modes listed.

If you are the CEO of a corporation, this is the perfect book to give every one of your executive and middle managers about 4-6 months into your Lean journey. Ask them to determine if they individually match any modes and if any of their subordinates match. Then require them to develop an action plan to reverse course before the failure becomes complete.

4Implementation insurence - from a well proven sourceMar 31, 2007
By David C. Hogg "Consortium Developer"
Here is a straignt-from-the-shoulder book by Larry that anyone initiating lean - or who already has a lean implementation underway - should read either to learn, or, use as a checklist to ensure a safe landing with the implementation. Lary is no stranger to this topic as he has shared his thinking with practitioners through the many workshops he has given over the past three years on this topic. At the largest NA Regional Lean Conference delivred in 2005 his workshop was rated number 1 by the practitioner participants. Many of us have his "World Class Manufactuing - a shop flor guide" always near by. Thanks Larry for sharing so we may better protect our invstment in Lean implementations we have underway - or will shortly.
