Experts estimate that it now takes roughly 7 to 10 calories of fossil fuel energy to bring one calorie of food energy to the American plate. Not only have our eating habits turned us into an increasingly overweight society, but the alarming truth is that our food choices are having as much of an impact on the planet as the cars we drive. Go Green Get Lean is the perfect eating plan for our time. Revealing easy-to-follow steps anyone can take to eat for a healthy body and planet—and drop up to 9 pounds in the first 2 weeks—Kate Geagan helps readers see the questionable value of “convenience” foods, and explains why going green doesn't require a drastic vegan overhaul. Because there are many nutritional benefits to be drawn from some non-plant-based food choices, she points readers to the best selections, including occasional splurges they can enjoy in good conscience. In learning to make truly LEAN choices, Kate offers the following straightforward formula: Before eating food, ask yourself: Local or global? What was the Energy used to bring it to my plate? (Include processing, packaging, transportation, and temperature of food.) Animal or plant? (Plant foods are greener.) Is this Necessary? (Is this food critical to my health and weight goals?) This trailblazing work—the first to offer a specific weight-loss plan along with the promise of a lowered carbon footprint—makes it possible for readers to help the environment and their waistlines at the same time.

Healthy sensible eating planMay 11, 2009
By K. Henderson I wouldn't call this a diet, more of a healthy eating plan that is also tasty and good for the environment. Since trying to be more "green", my skin looks better, I have more energy and the recipes are categorized by season making it fresh and easy to shop. Interesting data on the impact of our food choices. And you are encouraged to drink coffee, red wine and eat dark chocolate! No downside here...

This book does a wonderful job of combining credible nutrition information with eating low carbon footprint foods which will help you lose weight AND save the planet. Go Green, Get Lean is so full of well-researched information. It offers lots of practical tips that I can use with my clients as a registered dietitian and with my family as a mother of two young daughters. From meal plans and seasonal recipes to snack ideas, this book will not disappoint! It's a must read for anyone interested in helping the environment, losing weight, or improving the quality of the diet for you and your family.

By B. Rugg I am a stay-at-home mom who has completely changed her way of purchasing and eating food thanks to this book! There is so much informative "green" content that we can all benefit from. Everyone should read this book to learn more about our environment and maintain a healthy diet at the same time.
Thank you!

Excellent guide to a diet that's healthy for the planet as well as you!Apr 20, 2009

I had known that a "flexitarian" diet has a much lower impact on the Earth than the typical American way of eating (of course, a vegetarian one is even more eco-friendly but I'm not ready to give up animal proteins entirely just yet). As a Christian, I feel a responsibility to try to be a good steward of God's creation. I also want to take good care of the gift of the body He gave me.
While I had a general sense that eating a plant-based diet with meat "as a condiment" was the way to go, reading "Go Green, Get Lean" has been a real eye-opener. I had no idea that the average American diet creates more per-person CO2 emissions than the typical amount Americans drive. Or that the food system consumes nearly 20% of all petroleum burned annually in the U.S. Red meat alone accounts for 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions from food in the average American household. Every 1 kilogram of beef consumed (~8 quarter-pound servings) has the same CO2 emissions as driving the typical European car for 155 miles. If Americans were to substitute 1 lb. of bread per month for 1 lb. of beef each year, that would save energy equivalent to 120 million barrels of oil!
As Ms. Geagan shows, eating a "flexitarian" diet rather than a meat-heavy one also makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight. 1/4 lb. of porterhouse steak contains 388 calories vs. a mere 94 for 1/4 lb. of tofu. Not only does obesity raise the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and other health problems but it's also bad for the environment. A study done by researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine reported on CNN today found that the increase in obesity in the U.K. from the 1970 to today accounts for 270 million metric tons annually of additional greenhouse gas emissions. Yikes!
Regardless of one's views on the "hot button" issue of climate change, I believe we should be erring on the side of caution. I hate to sound like an alarmist, but if we wait to take action until the debate over global warming is resolved it very well might be too late. Eating the way Ms. Geagan recommends is an easy and inexpensive way to lower our carbon footprint.

Nice greening bookJan 25, 2010
By E. Frank I got this for the greener food options, and can't speak to weight loss, but it's got some great suggestions on more eco-friendly food choices. I've enjoyed many of the recipes, and have found the suggested changes easy to make and satisfying.
